I find this to be true in general although *VERY VERY RARELY* you get lucky and there is a good restaurant for pretty cheap.

I was born in a podunk town (ok really an effete librul college town in podunk nowhere), moved to a large city when I was a baby, spent a few of my high school years in podunk, went to college in podunk, worked in a different podunk for a few years again, moved to a large city about 15 years ago.

Basically in podunk if they are locals, they are hostile to food that isn't recombinant garbage. They do burgers and whatever their local meat specialty is quite well. There is easy access to farmers so if you are so inclined you can make your own food and eat very very well, at home. But restaurants? No, please. They wouldn't know good food if you loaded it into the back of a luxuriously appointed domestically manufactured pickup truck (which is about as grand as these people can think).

And forget about finding good wine or spirits. Beer, sure, there are some people who care a great deal about beer, and that's great. But there is more to drinking well than just beer.

Pic related, it's the local wildlife.
