Try using this instead of ketchup. It says BBQ sauce, but it doesn't have smoke flavoring because it's actually supposed to go on smoked meats, but it also has a lot less sugar and more spices than ketchup. I read some old ketchup recipes, and Stubb's BBQ sauce is actually closer to them than what modern ketchup is.
