That shit is Doritos' attempt to copy the snack Takis, which are also pretty much exactly as you describe them. Kind of painful to eat as they are mostly salt and acid.

I briefly moved from the northeast to LA and was really confused as to why there was always a huge line for the supermarket deli fried chicken. The staff usually doesn't even know how to cut the deli meat properly, it's like the only thing they typically serve is fried chicken.
