Lack of education and infrastructure among too many of its citizens, allowing them to be taken advantage of by people who are either fanatical or just like power over others.

Iran used to be a progressive and beautiful country, and it fell for many reasons. One of the reasons and one of the reasons it will never rise again is the lizard eaters (rednecks) invading. Uneducated "fundamentalists" insisting on things going back to the way they were hundreds of years ago rather violently, and isolating the population from exposure to the rest of the world, will fuck things up.
