I know that feel. I spent a lot of time trying to grow a starter on multiple occasions and it was really like trying to keep suicidal pet.

I also tried growing my own grapes, it took years to get to the point that I finally got a reasonable crop, then one day I added up all the money I spent on things to keep birds away, nets, goose chase, trellises, grape bags, time and effort and realized that when I finally got some the grapes had cost me about $20 a pound.

Some people say that when you spend the time to make something from scratch it makes it extra special and better.

In the case of sourdough bread and grapes that's bullshit. the grapes were never as big or as sweet as any I could buy and the bread was never even close to what I could get from any place that sold sourdough.

Some things are better, take less time, and cost way less to just buy them.

I've priced the stuff to make home brew beer and it's way cheaper and there less problems and a better more consistent product with even the cheapest swill.

I used to make my own pies, and they were damn good pies, but I could buy an exactly as good pie from the frozen food section of my grocery store. Sara lee and other companies had perfected the pie, all I had to do was bake it.

Same quality and less cost than I could make it.

Some things are better and less expensive than store bought but some things are not and never will be.
