I want you to know that only three things in my life have ever moved me to tears: when i confessed my love to a beautiful mormon boy I had chased across the world to his mission in Peru and was rebuffed; when my maltese-dachsund cross Ralph ran out into the road and had his quick heart trampled by a brutish white van; when I saw the Laurent-Perrier Chatsworth garden at RHSChelsea, its romantic colours hypersaturated by the gently overcast light of British Summer. I won't be adding your opprobrium to that list. I see no point in apologising for the quiet joy I take in living my life as a humble epicure, just as I wouldn't deny you yours in savaging me with cruel words.
