Its a meme that indians are vegetarian, the population is larger and there are more vegetarians due to meme religious views. The immigrants that came to the west were also from the punjab region which is more vegetarian. Theyre the ones that wear the turbannon, google sardar jokes and you will realize theyre the people in india we make fun of!

Im south indian and india isnt really big on fish but compared to what the outside world knows as "indian" food its more from the landlocked states and western india.

All 4 states in the south have a coast line so fish is eaten but just not as much. The south has much higher rates of non vegetarians compared to the rest of india.

Thats probably because theyre frying them in old ass oil thats been used to cook other stuff.

Dont order then as a starter, its like paying $2-5 bucks for a couple potato chips. You can buy a whole stack of them to fry at home.

Theyre more of a southern thing so you have to eat it with south indian food. Especially the tapioca ones.

Not sure where youre getting that from, the food you see in most indian joints outside india is mughal type which is in the central/north region of india. Average person there doesnt eat meat much there but its not to say all of india is 50% vegetarians. There are lots of people who consume meat, most of it being chicken and goat.

If curry and naan are influences from europe why dont you find spices bring used in europe as much?

The only thing I can think off the top of my head is tomatoes that the Portuguese brought over to india.

Indian food varies from state to state, hell even the whole indians are vegetarians is a bit of a meme. Even the whole north india has more meat dishes is a meme as its the west& north part of india that eats more vegetarian food while the south & eastern part of india eat a ton more meat.

Im south indian and no one at home eats the meal with 3-5+ small portion of veg/non veg servings. That stuff is called a thali and is mostly for restaurants that serve 99.9999% of the vegetarian food and theyre like a buffet. Honestly sometimes their food is pretty good but you cant eat too much of it. Produced in big ass batches and can change depending on who the cook is.

Dosa is breakfast food, as is idli/vada/upma/etc etc food that is "south indian food". Most of the time you only get 1 chutney at home unless your mom is a slave in the kitchen. Think of it like waffles or pancakes, its ok food but id rather not have that stuff for lunch and/or dinner.

Pic semi related, north is more what outsiders know. The south is actually more non veg, the amount consumed is not that high compared to other countries but the % of the population from the state which eats non veg is true.
