Fuck bread crumbs or croutons on mac-n-cheese. The only purpose is to add texture, and it fails at that. The bread just soaks up cheese and turns mushy. The only acceptable topping for mac-n-cheese is stewed tomatoes.

You need stewed tomatoes for god-tier mac & cheese. The acidity and tartness balances the creaminess. Don't bother with croutons though. They always go soggy and miss the point of having croutons at all.

You need either some roasted red peppers, or some stewed tomatoes on your mac n cheese, OP. Personally I like the stewed tomatoes, I think the acidity pairs nicely with the creaminess of the cheese.

Don't be one of those dipshits that ruins the top layer with croutons though. The croutons get soggy and it completely defeats the point of having croutons.
