How do I into cooking without having to work in a shithole kitchen or go to culinary school?

Or, if i have to go to school, where, and what's the least amount of time i need to spend there?

I'm going to the bar with some old friends tonight. The thing is, I have a major sweet tooth and can't stand the taste of alcohol. Now, I can drink almost anything, but the only thing I've ever had that doesn't make me grimace is rum & Coke and Bud fucking Light. Are there any drinks that aren't super bitter that don't fall into the feminine category?
