1 cup can mean at least 3 different things depending on context and country. 1 cup is normally half a pint. Keep in mind that a pint in the UK is 20 fluid ounces, but only 16 in the US (not to mention that fluid ounces are slightly different in the US too). Most places you see "cup" in recipes are American, so you can assume 8 fl. oz. Generally speaking though, if someone is saying "cup" it doesn't need to be quite so precise, so I find using 1 coffee mug full is always good for a cup, or 1 pint glass for 2 cups. If you're really stuck, just type "0.25 cups in ml" into Google and it has a converter.
