On Craigs list people give away dogs all the time.

They do not normally give away other meat for free.

Do any thrifty Anons have good dog recipes?

in certain parts of the world we did, and still do.

Ultimately, in the Western World - Europe, the Middle East, etc, the pig and the dog were both endemic. Both were sociable animals that could be adopted and trained by humans, both had minimal value as beasts of burden. Dogs however, in addition to being leaner and less flavourful than pigs, were more useful than hunting. Essentially, the Dog was more useful as a friend, and the pig more useful as a meal.

Elsewhere, such as the Americas and SEA, where dogs were present but pigs were not (originally), Dogs were in fact used as a food source (and still are in some rural areas)

However dog farming is very inefficient, so as a food product it would remain niche, as a ceremonial or lesser food source.

The inefficiency of dogs as food, combined with the efficiency of Pigs as food, combined with Western Culture which developed around this paradigm, resulted in an environment where the Dog was elevated as a companion and the Pig consigned to food.
