I always watched the Food Network growing up, never put any more effort into making myself something besides a hot ham and cheese. Eventually, I turned 18 and just wound up working in a kitchen because my roommate got me a job. I ended up working my way up the ladder a bit, I'm a sous chef at a fancy Thai place now, been cooking professionally for about 8 years. What really stuck with me after all those years though is the satisfaction you gain from putting the effort in. Not only do you get to enjoy your food, you can share with others and can enjoy recognition from it as well as a sense of self-satisfaction. I love bullshitting a meal together at work for everyone to enjoy, making chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and gravy at a Thai restaurant is an exercise in cooking knowledge as well as being fun to do. Food, more than most other things, brings people together. It's a concept that is inherent to every human being that has ever lived on planet Earth, from the lonely autists throwing their dino nuggets into the oven, all the way up to dictators, politicians, and men who have achieved greatness. Anyone can appreciate a good meal, and it can break down barriers of culture, race, creed, religion, and otherwise all in the name of enjoying the oil fueling the machine.
