the correct way to split kindling like that is either to hold the wood parallel to the axe shaft like pic related and bring them down together, or, to stand the wood up on a flat surface, hold it with a stick if necessary, and strike it.

you don't want to rely on good luck or never making a mistake with dangerous things like axes or guns
