At any rate, as you no doubt are aware, the argument would go as follows: Supporting authoritarian regimes makes you look "strong" because democratic pluralism is "weak" and "destined to fail" or whatever. Kim Jong Un good. Putin good. Duterte good. Xi good. Trudeau bad. Merkel bad. Too many refugees! Too many jobs lost! China took er jerrbs. We took China's jerrbs. They have to go back. Very stable.
