Put a lid on the pot/pan. If doable, bring outside onto a hard surface away from any buildings. If you have sand or soil nearby, gently shovel it on top to assist with smothering (don't go too fast because you risk knocking off the lid and potentially spreading the fire, if it hasn't already gone out).

In the case of a restaurant, you can manually trigger the fire suppression system if smothering it doesn't work.
