Also, I don't know about where you are, but here the stores will generally keep stacks of 50 or 100 in special paper tubes which they just crack open into the register if they need more change.
I personally just request some of those tubes every once in a while and fill them up with change, they have both a set length and the weight of a full tube written on them so they can just check either of them if they want to make sure you're not trying to bamboozle them.
