the fag i was replying to was talking about how ships didn't need refrigeration. they didn't need it because all they served was grog and hard tack. grog is shit and i'd like to see you swig a slosh of 1:2 rum to water and bite down on a earworm-ridden wheat rock. the "salt pork" (jerkey) they had was miniscule and sparse.
and in the winter, nobody was slugging grog and hard tack. they're not on a ship and have access to open fires and ovens as well as whatever stock of food they've prepared in advance. if they want good alcohol, they'd grab mead, cider, beer, anything but fucking grog, and if they wanted good food, they'd grab anything but hard tack and salt pork so long as they had stored flour and living cattle.
