I was in a critical growing period and my autism was manifesting with extreme prejudice. Anything that had much flavor at all would freak me out so I had to eat bland foods. I think that phenomenon is how tendies got associated with autistic manchildren since processed meats have such a benign flavor that they are basically the perfect food. I also taught myself to read prior to that phase, but lost my ability to speak properly as a trade-off. 20 years later, one of my favorite past times is eating weird foods to see how my perception of taste has changed since I was 6.
