I'd try poaching them, change the water out after it comes to the boil the first time to reduce the freezer burn taste, then throw a couple stock cubes in with the replacement water. Make a sauce by pouring hot oil over garlic and spring onion, or something like a salsa or chimichurri.

It looks like you might already be doing it, but if not, cook the rice or lentils in stock and throw a few aromats into the water like garlic or bay leaves. If you're okay using a little oil try making webm related by pouring smoking hot oil over minced garlic and scallion. Maybe try some furikake, or making a dhal.

I mean, bearing in mind we're talking about a literal toddler cooking so maybe he added too much oil, he's making fried rice. It's not going to be the same if you just spritz the pan with a cough of fat. It carries flavours and helps evenly brown food, and it's a significant source of energy.

If you didn't make the accompanying sauces this is like chomping through a head of romaine lettuce and complaining that caesar salad is tasteless.

This. For a quick sauce, chop up garlic, ginger, scallion, chilli if you want, add a pinch of salt and carefully pour some smoking hot oil over.
