I never grew up on spicy food, but looking at my pale skin and ginger hair, you would never guess I would have any tolerance for it, and I would not either.
However, four years ago, I was an exchange student in Northeast Thailand, and I found out I LOVED spicy food.

Pretty much ordering in Thailand went like this:
>Friends and I go out to eat
>Let's get somtam!
>I want it super spicy.
>Waiter looks at me and giggles, sometimes they would make it ridiculously spicy, wanting to watch me squirm.
>Have an easier time eating it than my Thai friends.

I wish I could get somtam in America that did not suck. Even food court somtam in Thailand was fucking awesome.
