they decided that tobacco was too icky for them. they sold the pipe tobacco trademarks to peterson, who renewed the production contract with STG so the blends didn't change only the labels. they spun off the pipe division into 'white spot pipes'. the cigar lines disappeared entirely.

fortunately, when dunhill did this they wound up releasing mcconnell from their old non-competes. mcconnell had blended the dunhill tobaccos back in the 1960's and 1970's, and once dunhill was gone they hauled the recipe books out of the safe, tweaked them for modern tobaccos (some varietals aren't available, tobacco quality in general has gone down) and introduced a whole suite of dunhill-equivalent blends. many of these aren't even being made by STG for peterson, and the ones that are the mcconnell versions are higher quality because the recipes date back before the bean counters started cheaping out.
