they're correct that dark roasts are lower quality product and also that dark roasts mask the deficiencies of lower quality beans. that isn't a conspiracy at all; it's the truth. that said, there's nothing wrong with enjoying dark roasts. dark roasts are the most suitable type of coffee for drinking with lots of cream and sugar; but that's just the problem; it's only really enjoyable because other things are being added to provide good flavors. higher quality medium and light roasted coffee has to taste good on its own, and that doesn't work with crap quality beans at all. dark roasted coffee is cheap to make because there's no real benefit to using quality beans for dark roast; it's going to taste basically the same whether you're using good quality beans or crap beans
