Does "plain coffee" just mean black? If so, do people really hate it? If I'm just making a quick cup in an automatic drip machine with some preground shit I bought at the store, sure. It'll probably be a bad experience unless I add some cream and sugar. But when I go through the effort of importing some $25/lb single source bean, unless it's meant to be drank with cream and sugar like some are, I'm not adding anything to it. The whole god damn point of getting into specialty coffee is tasting coffee that's good on its own. You can detect notes and emphasize certain aspects by tweaking variables in your pourover. Adding god damn half and half would ruin it. People here can do whatever they want, but some coffees are best drank black.

In terms of premium wines, that's completely accurate. Winemaking practices, equipment, and professionals are shared/traded on a global level. Spanish wines are aged in Californian barrels and French nobility build wineries in Chile. With reasonable investment, good wines can be and have been made anywhere, "terroir" notwithstanding. You aren't special, frogbro.

I went there two weekends ago.
Went to plenty of bars, but only went to one restaurant actually.
Hop Cat is what it was called, IIRC.
Good burger, and ~100 beer choices.

This is a wine thread. Post what you're drinking, what you've recently purchased, what you're holding on to for a special occasion, what your favorites are, or what you've been trying to find.

My most recent purchase was a bottle of old madeira, Blandy's colheita boal 1968. Haven't cracked it yet, but I'm super excited- it's by far the oldest madeira I will have tried, and I've been looking for a good bottle for quite a while.

Currently hanging on to a few bottles of amarone, as well as two of vin jaune, a bottle of Radikon Oslavje, and a couple of other bits and bobs including a 2003 vintage of Radikon merlot.

Question to more experienced al/ck/ooks:

How do I combine drinking and staying reasonably thin?

I am in my first year or two of regular drinking and I actually grew capable of maintaing life while being a drunk (or rather bear life so far via the magic of booze).

The only thing that makes this a serious problem is the fear of turning into a fat fuck. Trough all my life I managed to stay thin without too much of an effort, but I'm pretty sure that continous drinking might change that easily, and what's worse - irreversibly.

Is the progress of turning in that disgusting shape dependable on the type of alcohol? I generaly stick to beer which I assume is the worst option in terms of calories, though I sometimes swith to vodka when things get tough.

What is the best course of action to avoid gaining weight while sustaining the regular drinking program?

If you haven't tried something, buy some middle-of-the-road brand. Don't dish out a hundred bucks on something higher-end just to find out you do't like it. But cheap stuff can give the wrong impression (this happened with me and gin). So buy something right in the middle, preferably in the smallest quantity available.

Once you know what specific kinds of drinks you like, branch out. If you like dark beers, try different varieties. Aim to understand what makes a drink taste a certain way. Trial and error is always effective, but be sure to do a little research too.

Also, if you cook, pick up some red and white wines for cooking purposes (gotta make that risotto)

This is an alcohol thread. Come in and post/discuss what you're drinking now, and what your favorites are (inb4 ethyl). All drink preferences welcome- anyone who would use the word 'pleb' in conversation can just stay out. This is about discussing what we enjoy and maybe finding some new drinks to look for, not being dicks because somebody hasn't drunk any 50-year-old scotch whisky this week.
