The original experiments were done on chickens and rabbits, but once they tested this hypothesis on humans it fell apart. What they found is the human body can make about 70% of the cholesterol it needs, if you eat any cholesterol e.g. eggs then your cholesterol levels will rise to their normal levels and if you keep eating even more cholesterol then your liver will reduce the amount of cholesterol it makes so the cholesterol levels dont really rise any more. The guy in the article linked below ate 25 eggs every day and had normal cholesterol.
