I work in craft services PM (providing large scale food services to schools, prisons, etc.) and have a few friends pretty high up in fast food.

Have you noticed the advent of new gimmick items being released much more regularly by major chains? Excluding McDonalds, they are all moving in this direction because while not making up the majority or even close to the majority of direct fast food consumers, internal market researchers have determined that consumers of these videos are huge product influencers, namely they have a great deal of affect when recommending fast food products to friends and regularly purchase large quantities. Pretty much everyone except for mcdonalds, is moving from increasing quality and lowering prices to finding new silly gimmicks that will collectively get 150M+ unique impressions across the whole yt fast food sphere
