That's a little tiny one that's for crushing up pills and stuff like that. Get a big ass Thai one, I got mine from a Thai store in chinatown manhattan, that mortar is heavy so is the pestle the way to use it to not do the crushing directly but let the pestle do the work. You kind of give the pestle a guided drop on top of whatever's in the mortar, keep repeating until it's all some nice friendly mush in the mortar.
Mine is like pic related and recommened to me by a crusty old Thai dude. If you buy shit from a celebrity fag like jamie oliver you'll get ripped off.

Tellicherry peppercorns and a mortar and pestle. Get a heavy duty one. Grind the peppercorns as you need them.

I like pic related best myself. It's got a heavy pestle and if you're doing it right then that's what the pestle is supposed to do against the mortar. The pestle is supposed to do the work. It's a Thai one and not technically a molcajete but it certainly get's the job done.

The Thai pestles have a rounded bottom and be used used to both smash and grind, but the flat bottom on the pestle of a molcajete doesn't seem as useful.

I guess it also depends on what you want to use it for. I've never tried this but I've read that a coffee grinder will work for dried things as well, it can be cleaned out by grinding dry white rice afterwards.
