they aren't, not even for sushi. japanese soy sauce is mostly for more delicate dishes like that because it's much more mild than chinese soy sauce.
try chinese light and dark soy sauce from decent brands like lee kum kee, pearl river bridge or kimlan.

light is the stronger one. people usually use 2-3 parts light and 1 part dark
