Gros Michel and other variants are too susceptible to blight and diseases to be mass produced on a large scale plantation.

They literally only genetically engineered cavendish to be resistant to most strains of fungus and blight.

I heard before the year 1920, the Gros Michel was actually the most common type of banana, and that it tastes exactly like what we consider """artificial banana flavoring""". This is the reason why "banana flavored" items taste nothing like what we call bananas. Because we only know the bland, grainy taste of a cavendish.

Anybody who's eaten a Gros Michel says they taste like "banana flavoring".

That's why things with artificial banana flavoring taste nothing like what we think of as the taste of a banana, because we only know the blandness of cavendish.
