Not a birthday cake story, but a good one nonetheless. My uncle was a world-class pastry chef that got me into cooking and introduced me to some amazing chefs in the Chicagoland area. We went to a pool party at Charlie Trotter’s place once. About 4 years ago he got stomach cancer and died within a couple months of contracting it. The man worked 14 hour days his whole adult life and he just dies in his late 50’s. His daughter, my cousin, had planned her wedding that fall before he got sick. Dying of cancer he was so upset he wouldnt be able to make his daughter’s wedding cake. His kitchen lead made the cake instead. When I saw it, I couldnt stop from crying. Pic posted below.
