All the FIRE people I've met seem to be doing it because they're unhappy/discontented in their current life that they make these grandiose plans to retire so early and that they just have to live in their unsatisfying world until their retirement age. 40 years old in OP's case I guess.
I don't blame them. People I think in general are unhappy/unsatisfied/discontented with life because most people don't actually think about what they want. What makes you happy? Do you even know? It's a hard question to answer and most people try to ignore it or escape those intrusive thoughts.
FIRE people imagine that once they're retired it's going to be a smooth sailing happy ship of money and no financial worries. Sure, the money and no financial worries part might be true, but those two things are not the key to happiness. You'll get to your retirement age, retire, and then think, "What the fuck am I even doing?? Why am I not happy?"
This doesn't happen just with FIRE people either. I know many FAANG workers who are making literally $200k+ a year and almost none of them are happy. They did their schooling. They got their internships. They got the degree from the good school. They got into a top tech company. They make more money than they even know what to do with. And yet I'd say about 90% of them are miserable. Why? Because they also didn't take the time to figure out what they want, what makes them happy. They road the learn-to-code gravy train and assumed all of life's worries would be lifted away once those $5k+ paychecks started rolling in. Nope. Life doesn't work that way for most people.

>Microwave beeps slightly differently every time I use it
I think someone is trying to communicate with me but I can't just start the microwave and let it beep because then it goes back to normal. It somehow knows when I'm using the microwave for real vs just trying to hear the message.
