It's actually really good.

I have to agree the pour over is nicer.

As far as pre-ground, I think you're gonna have to just try out what's in your neighborhood.
Like just talking to your local grocer and see what they've got coming in fresh (or reasonably fresh).

Other than that, I guess check the labeled dated. I know those aren't entirely trustworthy and the canisters are vacuum sealed but it gives you a round about date of packaging.
