You don't strictly need one especially starting out but they are convenient for gongfu brewing. They are pretty cheap as well, a usable one can be had for under $10 USD. Paying more is mostly for looks.

Is it a little ball strainer or is it one of the big mug ones like picrel? The small ones often don't give the tea enough room to expand.

If you are looking to get into Chinese teas then I would recommend trying it out. You get a lot more control over the teas and some types of tea really benefit from that. You could technically gongfu brew with a large basket strainer and a small mug if you want to try it out without buying anything.
