When I was a little kid in the 80s, some traveler guy came into my school and did a presentation for the kids about argentina for some weird reason. All I remember is he really liked talking about gauchos, mate, and capybaras.

Anyway, to your point, yeah it's a phase. Usually somewhere between high school and the first couple years of college, people start doing pretentious shit to stand out and look """"cultured"""" but end up looking dumb.

Eventually people get through the phase and just do what most people in their own culture do, and the reason is because it's cheaper and easier to do it. No point in buying some bitter herbs and drinking them through a specialized contraption, when there's a place that sells coffee on pretty much every street corner in every town
