STEM-anon here, to tell you why "99% of X" agree on anything.

No one gives a shit how objective or smart you are. You get a job by making connections and knowing people. You get funding by seducing rich, faceless entities with bleeding heart bullshit in your grant papers. Your arguments mean nothing without having "references", because nothing is true unless someone else has already said it. This heavily incentivizes scientists to smell which way the wind is blowing and go with it, because you don't get those connections and grants without sucking dick. "99% of scientists agree" because if they don't their career is fucking over. It's extortion.

This makes it very, very easy for someone to control a narrative, should they want to. Pay off a few key individuals to say what you want to say and make any "references" that disagree with your narrative inaccessible on any "reputable" scientific platforms (keeping in mind that they get to decide what's "reputable"). Science is a cult, and "scientific" means nothing but "validated by the cult".
