Onions, garlic, cream, and yes, also peas if you like, belng in a great Carbonara. It's an American recipe (look it up shitaly), so it has great variety.

The good news is that carbonara is one of the most flexible noodle dishes out there. There are literally as many carbonara recipes as there are cooks, all with their unique takes on it.
American style is the most popular and famous, but Filipino style and Japanese style carbonara are the runner ups. Check out Italian style carbonara for a minimalist approach, but you need a good chef or else salmonella ;)
