It depends on the drink of course. Whiskey I will sniff and drink relatively slowly. A cocktail like an old fashioned I will try to drink at a reasonable pace so the ice cubes doesn't water it out too much. Something like my favorite Gammel Dansk (a danish herbal digestif) I will have as a shot, simply because that's how it should be drunk.
