When the electric rice cooker was invented, the average japanese home was still using wood fired stoves. A woman could almost never leave the house, she had to tend the fire all day for cooking and hot water. Cooking rice was especially bothersome because you had to watch it carefully and regulate the temperature of the fire the whole time.
Say what you will, but the ease and convenience of electric rice cookers was unironically a revolution in women's quality of life.
