Death is ugly in nature. It takes a lot to hurt something so bad that it actually dies. Lose a limb here and there, lose an eye, lose a claw, get parasites... Eventually it gets to the point where the animal can no longer successfully feed or maintain normal bodily functions, at which point it either starves to death, dies of exposure to the environment, or something will come along and tear it apart while eating it alive. Going from decent health to death in only the time it takes to boil is an act of mercy by nature's standards.
