Honestly it seems to me that the Dollar Menu was one of their biggest long-term mistakes, but was extremely successful short term, especially for getting people in the door ordering product.

I really think most of it is price gouging at this point. Like, how much does it really cost to make a fucking McChicken at industrial scale? I'd wager 1.50 at most, probably less?

The wage increases are not helping much. I haven't seen young people working at McDonald's or any fast food in YEARS now, and why would they? You can mow lawns, outside, in peace, and clock 15 USD/hour easily and make just enough to get pocket money for the stuff teenagers buy. Back when wage was 7.25 and the work wasn't complete shit, that was acceptable. Now you have managers who are complete cunts with a metric focused workflow that punish for the smallest slight, and turnover is abysmal.

This is why I don't really care about work anymore. Why bother? I've been an IT corpo rat for the last eight years, and before that I was an insurance adjuster.

Basically, all those corpo gigs are rat races and the only way to stay on top is to make the job your hobby. So you spend time getting certified, polishing resumes, and negotiating and interviewing.

Again, why bother? We hit the Cyberpunk dystopia button in 2008, the pandemic just sort of accelerated it and we are on track to have an entire generation of young people who are not really building a future for anything but themselves, and that sort of degradation of family dynamics means the death of a society. You want healthy young people? Make sure they can get a job quickly, get a house with a backyard cheap, and get a woman/man to have kids with. I would literally sign a law mandating subdivisions be built with sub 250K starter homes for young people only, even if my taxes went up like mad. The externalities alone would skyrocket the economy back to the post-war era quickly. Then again, we are seeing Gen Z buying homes faster than millennials, but news articles are all over the place these days so who the fuck knows.
