mainly because sin tax is good revenue, and partly because police chiefs in canada believe high liquor prices discourage binge drinking.
I'm sure you've noticed that most alkies stick to beer and fortified wine.

But hey, try getting in to rum. prices are lower compared to whisky and we get an oddly good selection of it up here.
