Opinion on when people say "expresso"

What exactly is the idea behind espresso? I have an espresso machine, but don't have the pot for it, and the steam doesn't work (clogged is my guess). I had to throw my coffee pot out because once again my stupid wife just pushed it into it's spot without removing the coffee and grounds, so this is all I have for the time being.

I guess the question is: Am I good measuring out a shot worth of grounds, letting it brew a few ounces into a cup, and drinking that, or am I wasting potential from the grounds?
