It's when you have something that is kind of hokey or campy or absurd and it's not clear whether or not you're expressing genuine interest or being ironic. Like if you started listening to Nickleback ironically, maybe to annoy your friends, and then you eventually end up liking some of their songs earnestly. Or people who do acoustic covers of Britney Spears songs at open mics. It's kind of funny at first but they still would have to learn all the lyrics and chords in order to play it by memory, which would take some time, so you can't tell if the guy is wink wink nudge nudge isn't this silly or if no, they really do like "Toxic"
