Part of it is probably some of the gas escaping either by permeating through the plastic itself (normally takes years, but higher pressure differentials can accelerate it), or from the gasket of the cap failing to contain the gasses due to stress. After a certain point the outward flexing of the walls and compression of remaining gas can account for the appearance of compressing the liquid. I don't think the plastic could survive long enough for the liquid contents to compress all that much though, some imperfection from the molding process would split first.

The bottle's cap is too large by proportion for it to be a 2L bottle, but otherwise this math and explaination checks out. Judging by the design of the container, I would guess it's either a 1L or 0.5L bottle. The 20 ounce bottles have a thinner lower section and have bumps for grip, which is why I rule them out.
