Reminds me of that part in one of Anthony Bourdain's book where he got a job working in a shitty seafood restaurant as a kid and that his older coworkers with hairy arms and calloused hands would humiliate him when he burned his babby hands.
When he eventually went to culinary school, he had a professor who was cruel. He went from student to student to break them down. When he reached Anthony, the professor quickly realized that Anthony was already broken down, so he moved on.
The lesson is that in order to build someone up into something worthwhile, you have to break them down first.
