Internet wasn't all that common until the early 2000s and even then it was radically different from what it is now.

It was more like 14 years here. I remember the meme community college I went to for like 8 months had a smoking lounge in the basement of the main building. When we went out drinking at bars we could just walk all over the place with a cigarette in our mouth no problem.

That said I finally quit for good 6 years ago and I don't miss it or regret it one bit. Being in your early 20s with a dick that doesn't work all that great isn't fun, same with all the other health problems it gives you. I also feel bad for all the bartenders and waiters and whoever else that developed like miner's lung from breathing tobacco smoke 8 hours a day everyday.
