European cheese contests can be inherently biased against foreign cheeses simply because they only accept DOC cheesemakers and give awards by class of cheese. You can make Red Leicester in America but it wouldn't be admissible or as good as what you can produce in England because of the terroir, but you can make new and different kinds of cheeses in America that are on par with euro cheese, just different. It's kind of silly that we put faith in these contests as objective measures of quality

It's kind of like entering a German Shepard in a Poodle contest
