Rye whiskey was a lot more popular 100 yrs ago but it has since fallen out of favor in the US and isn't as popular as it used to be. It's supposed to be peppery with an aroma of vanilla and ripe fruits, and shouldn't be corn-sweet like bourbon. There are still a few decent ones like Rittenhouse (my tried and true), Michter's, and Bulleit. If you want more selection, you're better off looking to northern neighbors. The Canadians know their rye so if you get the chance, grab a bottle of Lot 40, Whistlepig, Alberta Distillers Rye, Crown Northern Harvest, or Canadian Club 100% Rye.

The same reason why Johnny Walker is the best selling scotch in the world, and Coke the best selling cola. They all make an extremely consistent product whose taste doesn't deviate from bottle to bottle, or batch to batch. And they can outproduce the competition to flood the market and keep the price low and affordable enough to ensure perpetual mass consumption. Afterwards they spend a ton of money on branding and marketing to associate the name with an ideal, i.e. JD being the quintessential American booze of choice.

This may be almost blasphemous since I live outside Lynchburg, but I personally dont prefer to drink regular JD if I had a choice. There are so many other better whiskies being made nowadays. That being said, I do give it props for being the icon that it is. Plus their single barrel line is actually breddy gud.
