I have this set of pots and pans, I think it cost me around $500 but it should last me a lifetime.
I also have enameled cast iron dutch oven and a few nice knives.

I recommend stainless steel.
A good set of pots and pans can last you a lifetime, in my opinion it is worth spending as much as you can afford.
If you're poor consider buying just one or two pans at a time but get quality pans.

I bought this set about 2 years ago and I'm happy with it, I see it on sale every now and then for around $400.
