that's going to depend entirely on what kind you get, and what they're in. There are many kinds, of many qualities, and they can be tinned in water, olive oil, hotsauce, mustard, etc.

For a beginner I recommend these. No heads, no bones, no guts. No strong fish taste. Cheap (1.50 a can at my store). Super high in protien and the good fats, can be eaten straight or on crackers (like triscuits or wheat thins), on toast or crustini, mashed up with hot sauce, added into a salad oil and all, etc

One tin is 80 calories or so, and 19 g of protien. If you've never payed attention to nutrition label before, that is fucking insane. There should be no strong fishy odor or taste, if there is the tin has been punctured and it's gone bad. That said just be cautious where you dispose the tin as it will leave a lingering whiff after a while after opening.
