Actually I'd argue the key ingredient is the tomato. And considering we're in winter where fresh vine-ripened summer tomatoes aren't available, that OP didn't have a very good first BLT is not surprising. OP probably went with watery beefsteaks, but you can make do with Roma or Cherry tomatoes however. Also the kind of mayo used is an oft-overlooked ingredient.

I had some sort of healthy kraft mayo made with olive oil in the fridge... it had probably been there for about a year.

This thread reminded me to throw it out and i went and bought pic related at the grocery store to replace it with today.

FUCK YES. This stuff is what I remember from my childhood. I am soooo happy right now.
